Best Of 2007.

Happy New Year kiddies.

Is it just me or was 2007 a shitty year? Reading Pitchfork’s best of, I could only agree on one of the albums and that is The Field: From Here We Go Sublime. Holy Moly, that is a good album. Other than that, yeah the Kanye was good, but not BEST of the year. And for the record, I think Battles sucks. If I wanted to hear drums all day, I could go to Michigan Ave and see the kids who play on buckets all day.

As for movies? No Country For Old Men by a mile and thats about it. Ratatouille? Never seen it.

TV? Lost finale was grand, but that was ages ago.

Anyway, here’s to hoping 2008 ends the suck; starting with this blog.

Largest Hipster Shortage.

Today must be chaos in the corporate world. No one is getting their venti lattes. Printers are being left broken down across the city. Borders bookstores are terribly understaffed. Why? Because the bane that is Interpol, disputed kings of the ‘indie’ music scene, played a ‘secret’ show yesterday night at the Empty Bottle. Not only that, they played with The Liars and Deerhunter. Well, maybe played isn’t the right word. They formed a jam band that ‘jammed’ to dozens of kids and they didn’t even start until 12:30 am. How emo. The bassist could be seen in the other room (away from the stage) busting a move on the ladies. Is it unhip to have disliked them because they didn’t play what I wanted to hear? Is it pretentious for thinking that they are pretentious? “I mean, come on man, let them play what they like, dude. It’s Interpol, bro.” This phrase was said at least twice in 20 minutes by the crowd around me and another group of friends. Here’s to supporting your band. Hip hip, hooray.

OMFG1!! Crystal Castles.

I went to the Crystal Castles show very reluctantly because I am an old man and I hate doing stuff. Serge’s car had broken down 14 miles away and was unable to attend, so it was up to me and my girlfriend to brave the show solo… I had also acquired Halo 3 for the xboxen360 earlier (read:12:30 am) that day so I was very eager to stay in and play that. Anyway, we walked all of 6 blocks to the Metro and after being strangely overly frisked at the door and mocked by the white trash security guard for holding Bianca’s purse, we made it in. Still regretting going. I walked upstairs and waited in the favorite spot for watching shows. favorite spot The time was 7:32pm, CC went on at 7:30. I didn’t feel like drinking this show, so this was a totally sober show. Mind you, this is an all ages show, so there are tons of kids there, meaning I should be drinking so I can show that I am cool, but we all know how cool I really am.After about 30 seconds of what seemed like a warmup, sound test, bleepage attack, which was really the intro, the bass hits and I just about lose my mind. Holy. Shit. This is the best band evar! With a strobe light pulsing rapidly in an apparent attempt to induce strokes, the band (3 wonderkinds) jam out to what can only be described as tetris vs daft punk vs your face. The drummer was the shit. The strobe made him look all robotic and he was nailing that snare. The synth guy was just in his own world jamming out not looking up and the lead singer was having Grace Slick moments, which is kinda funny because the singers name is Alice. And/or meh.So this goes on for 30 minutes, and while I’m not really showing it on the outside, I have goosebumps and I am jamming on the inside. It was so rad. Alice was a bit over the top for me, but she knows how to put on a show. She jumped on top of the bass drum and put a foot on the snare drum while the drummer kept playing. Then she boarded the full stack (read:loudspeaker) and sang from up there. Oh yeah, she seems to have a fascination with strangling herself because she kept doing that with the mic cord while singing. Whatevs.I don’t have the pictures developed (read:downloaded), but I will post some up soon. In the meanwhile, enjoy this link to their myspace and here are a few videos for you to a) reminisce about the archer bus, and b) enjoy great music.
